Sumie Akiyama
Atelier AUTOS/Kisen Social Welfare Corporation (Chiba Prefecture)
When she first started making pottery, her works were flat. What prompted her to start making three-dimensional pieces was when a staff member showed her a Daruma doll she had drawn, placing two balls on top of each other. By making her works three-dimensional, even her small pieces have a sense of freedom, and her cuteness is expressed more vividly. Her "Story Series" was born from conversations with staff members, and she also creates works inspired by images of actions such as "running" and "sleeping." She has also begun to seriously try her hand at painting, which, like her pottery, allows her to express her unique style and expand her imagination even further.
