Shu Toriyama

Shu Toriyama | Yamanami Studio

Since his childhood, when he first discovered the joy of drawing by copying his favorite anime and game characters, his view of the world has expanded even further. His images in his head are reflected in his paintings, such as animals and landscapes drawn with a collection of fine, intricate lines, and cityscapes where monsters and other creatures live happily. His desire to create never fades, as drawing creates connections with people and is the energy to make his dreams come true.

Received the Jury Special Prize at the HERALBONY Art Prize 2024.

Shunichi Iwase

Once he has decided on a motif, such as a person or an animal, he uses a pen to slowly paint the entire page from his own unique perspective, leaving no space behind. His introverted and serious personality is reflected in his work, with each line drawn very carefully and delicately, as if thin threads were intertwined. In his daily life, he hardly speaks a word, and even when asked for his opinion, he only speaks one word in a weak voice with a blushing face, but his works are full of powerful appeals, exuding all of his hidden thoughts. He is another person who has found a way to express himself through the creation of his artwork, and his worldview is sure to continue to expand greatly.

Received the JR East Award at the HERALBONY Art Prize 2024.

He lives in Rikuzentakata City. He was born with cerebral palsy, an intellectual disability. He was interested in picture books and art books from an early age, and when he started drawing at the urging of his father, Minoru, who is a metal engraving artist, his talent developed and he even won an award at an art exhibition. In an instant, he lost his home, about 200 paintings he had made, the abundant nature he was familiar with, and the people who lived there... all these irreplaceable and precious things. He was so shocked and saddened that he put down his paint brush for a time, but his father's words made him pick up his brush again, and after going through this terrible experience, he has been able to move the hearts of many viewers.
